Seventh of December is celebrated every year as the ‘Armed Forces Flag Day’, to express solidarity with the serving and retired defence personnel, the martyrs and their dependents.
The Defence Service Personnel make solemn sacrifices while discharging their duties both in peace and war, as also during natural calamities or internal exigencies. Many of our gallant soldiers have made the supreme sacrifice, leaving behind their widows and their children. Flag Day brings to the forefront our obligations of looking after our disabled comrades-in-arms, widows and dependent of those who have sacrificed their lives for the country so that we, our children and our children’s children can live in peace and security.
In order to cater for the welfare needs of ex-Servicemen, disabled personnel, widows and orphans of martyrs, a Corpus Fund is maintained, which is operated by a Managing Committee, presided over by the Raksha Mantri at the Centre and the Governor/Lt Governor at the State/UT level. The Kendriya Sainik Board is responsible for administration of the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund.
The Armed Forces Flag Day Fund is registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulatory) Act 1976, which facilitates contribution from the NRIs also in foreign currency. The contribution to the Fund are also exempted from Income Tax.
